Vic Hollar ~ Inspecting Seed ~ April 2002
Our company was founded by Vic Hollar when in 1950 he purchased the R.H. James Seed Company. From the outset he insisted on the highest standards and honest dealings with all. This is the code he teaches to his sons and staff:
  • Produce good seeds, well cleaned, well packaged and delivered timely.
  • Sell seed at a competitive price that allows for continued research and development.
  • Search for ways to improve our seed and service.
  • Be honest with farmer growers in contracting, milling and paying. Get the best growers we can.
  • Give our customers what they need and what they want. Try to help them make a profit.
  • Be demanding of the people we hire. Find good ones and stay with them.
  • Be aware that change will come and it is necessary.

In the new millennium Hollar Seeds has changed greatly from 1950, but these values still guide us.

If you , our customer, are ever dissatisfied with our product or service you have only to let us know.  Our pledge is to keep Vic's code.

Historical Background

The R.H. James Seed was founded in 1900, it specialized in selling melon seed.  The melon seed was all grown near Rocky Ford, Colorado, which was famous for the quality of its cantaloupe.

In 1947 Victor E. Hollar left Burpee’s and started working for R.H. James. He started with nothing except an informal “work to purchase” agreement with the R.H. James Seed Company. By selling farm equipment, melon seed and alfalfa seed he was eventually able to purchase the company.

In the 1950’s Vic Hollar added watermelon, cucumber, tomato, squash and pumpkin seed to his price list. For a few years the business was known as the Peto-Hollar Seed Co., they split into Petoseed and Hollar Seeds in 1957, the two were completely separate and independent. Mexico and Canada were the only export markets. Vic introduced some of the very first hybrid vegetables, winning AAS awards early on. All profits went back into the business.

In the 1960’s he began exporting to Europe, the Middle East, and South Africa. Vic’s three sons entered the business. Continuing Vic’s main policy of “wholesale only through dealers and distributors”, the sons introduced the miniature pumpkin, the white skinned pumpkin, many hybrids and many innovative varieties.

Hollar Seeds currently exports to over 60countries. It has twice been recognized with Excellence in Export awards from the governor of Colorado.
