Vanguard F1(HSR 2866) is an early icebox hybrid which
matures in 76 days under Colorado growing conditions. It produces a heavy,
uniform crop of nearly round fruit (10 x 9 in / 25.5 x 23 cm) which average 13
lb (5.9 kg). The strong rind is an attractive fade resistant light green with
dark narrow green stripes.
The internal appearance is superior; bright red flesh contrasts nicely with small black seed and there is a well defined flesh-rind boundary. The eating quality is superb; the flesh is very sweet, solid, crisp and delicious. Vanguard has a compact vine and is resistant to some strains of Fusarium and Anthracnose. Compared to other hybrids in its class, Vanguard has better external color retention, improved flesh color and superior eating quality. It is the best eating watermelon early in the season |
