2009 Muskmelon Variety Trial Results

The University of Delaware has just released the results from their 2009 Muskmelon Variety Trials and once again, Hollar Seeds’ varieties rated highly against the standard commercial varieties. Dacona, Grand Slam, Halona, Home Run and Strike were among the twenty-two varieties that were evaluated for yield, quality and maturity.

Grand Slam and Halona ranked in the top five when it came to yield in pounds per acre, with 32,432 and 30,500 respectively. As far as yield in melons per acre, Hollar Seeds had 4 out of the top 5 with Halona, Dacona, Strike and Grand Slam with 6,154, 4,978, 4,978 and 4,771 respectively.

Grand Slam had the overall best performance. Not only was it one of the highest yielding melons in the trial, it also had the thickest flesh, smallest seed cavity and brix at 10.6%.
